David Rodriguez earns double-gold at Worlds

Santa Fe Brazilian Jiu Jitsu student, David Rodriguez, fought through five tough matches in August, 2017, to secure his spot as division champion in his belt and weight class at the annual IBJJF World Masters Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada. Later that evening, he captured the pound for pound absolute title, which makes him the undisputed world champion in the Masters III, blue-belt category. David started his journey with our school four years ago. He, his wife, and his children, all participate in classes at the Santa Fe academy. We are so proud of him.

Successful Anti-Bully Camp

The Santa Fe Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy hosted its very first Anti-Bully Camp. The camp was headed by Professor Thomas Pless along with about a dozen assistants, all of which are current students of the academy and volunteered their time.

There were roughly 90 children total that attended the 4 week long event. Kids came from Santa Fe, Rio Rancho, Eldorado, and Pojoaque. The curriculum included physical techniques for escaping and/or restraining a bully and lengthy discussions covering step by step strategies to deal with verbal bullying. Attendees parents also received instructional handouts covering our methods.

Many of the kids spoke about their personal experiences during discussion times. After the 2nd lesson, one child described being picked on by the same bully for quite some time and now had enough confidence to stand up for himself and tell the bully to leave him alone and that’s exactly what the bully did.

Our goal with the anti-bully camp is to instill in your child unshakable confidence so they can overcome bullies without violence and we are happy to report success. Thank you to all who supported this event and we look forward to more in the future.
